Phoenix Police charged a Muslim man with sexual assault and kidnapping after he allegedly tried to force his arranged marriage bride-to-be to have sex with him.
The families of Mohamed S. Abdullahi, 30, and the victim, a young woman believed to be approximately 18 years old, entered into “Nikah,” a formal Muslim marriage agreement. The union was against the wishes of the woman.
When she learned of it in December, she fled the state, but returned after two weeks in order to finish high school. After her graduation, the woman refused to go forward with the marriage.
On Monday, the woman’s parents took her to Abdullahi’s apartment in southeast Phoenix.
Trina Childs, a witness, said, “I saw some guys carrying a girl in, so I ran over to the front and they threw somebody and that girl in this house, and all of them just walked out.”
“She was crying, she was just screaming, and shaking her head. If I knew what was going on I would have called the cops, but I didn’t know at that time what was going on,” Childs added.
Abdullahi was also injured in the right hand and in the genital area during the assault.
When the assault was over, the victim managed to get her tablet from her purse and contacted a friend to call the police. When the officers arrived, the victim fled from the apartment and hid behind them.
Abdullahi was booked on charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault, and sexual assault.
The two families involved immigrated from Somalia: both are under investigation. So far, the victim has been unwilling to cooperate with the police and does not want to press charges against Abdullahi or his family.
